The world is passing through the age of data revolution with phenomenal growth of data every moment. Scientific processing of large volume data to extract the beneficial hidden information requires statistical methods and analyses. The old perception of Statistics as a mere collection of tools to gather, compile, and analyse data along with the misleading statement of ‘lies, damned lies and statistics’ have no place in the knowledge society dominated by the data revolution. In the contemporary world, statistics is the foundation of evidence-based decision-making using complex and large volume of data. The application of statistics has found new momentum of diverse disciplines due to the emergence of high-power computer, `big data, and data science/analytics. Many of the popular artificial intelligence methods such as machine learning tools and predictive modellings are essentially adopted statistical techniques. Because of its ability to uncover, otherwise unavailable, valuable information latent in the mess of data, statistical methods are increasingly being applied for both private and public decision-making, not to mention its crucial role in research and innovation. The scope of statistics is not confined by any artificial borders as it disseminates through policymaking across scientific disciplines, and private, public, and international spaces. Because of the inherent power of statistics, results from data have been widely used, misused and abused by many of those who are in authority and power, often creating controversies.
